Gericault, Courbet, and Balthus are a part of the ‘Mystical Tradition’, which is not related to any particular chronological period or ‘school’ in Western Art History. There is a mysterious, spiritual, sensual physicality to this work. These artists harken back to previous art yet break new ground with their daring choices and taboo-pushing subject matter. Disturbing psychology is crucial to the success of these pieces. They pave the way for Picasso and the Surrealists. In upcoming posts, we’ll look at some artists from different periods whom I consider to be apart of this tradition.
